Betty Jo Evans, 90

Betty Jo Evans, 90, of Altamont, passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, February 21, 2018, at 6:00 pm at her home.

Her funeral and burial will be conducted at a later date, hosted by the family. Burial rites will be in Funkhouser Cemetery. Her family is being assisted by the Kull Funeral Chapel of Altamont.

Betty Jo was born on January 18, 1928, in Turley, Oklahoma, one of two siblings, into the Christian family of Jodie and Opal Scrivner. At twelve years old, she moved with her family to Altamont in 1940. Her father was employed by the Carter Oil Company and she grew up in what was known as Carte Camp in Altamont during the oil boom. She and her family were longtime members of the First Baptist Church in Altamont.

During her younger years she attended Altamont High School, however, at 16 years old she was involved in an automobile accident that nearly ended her life. After being in a body cast for nine months in Barnes Hospital St. Louis, Mo., she recovered and graduated with her high school class of 1946, where she was Carnival Queen.

After graduation, Betty Jo then moved to Kansas and was employed as a telephone switch exchange operator. Moving back to Altamont a few years later, she met and married Carl Wayne (C.W.) Evans on July 2, 1949. She had numerous employment over the years that include the Altamont Garment Factory and the Effingham Glove Company. In 1962, Betty and her husband purchased the Long Branch Tavern, which became the B & W Tavern or sometimes known as “Boomers” or Betty and Wayne’s Tavern. Betty worked alongside her husband for 28 years.

After raising a family of three boys with her husband she retired after selling the business and continued to live a long life in Altamont where she was active in the community for so many years.

Betty Jo leaves to mourn in her passing: 1 son: Carl Phillip Evans of Altamont, and 3 Grandsons: Alexander Cole Evans, Clayton Wayne Evans and Chase Alexander Evans, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her Parents: Benefield and Beulah Opal Beardsley-Scrivner, her Husband: Carl Wayne Evans, 2 sons: Steven Dwayne Evans and Bruce Edwin Evans., one Granddaughter in infancy, one brother: Donald and his wife Leah Scrivner.

Memorials may be directed to the choice of the doner.
